Activated Carbon Filtration systems are the processes enabling the removal from the water of possible color, taste, odor, organic matter, chloramines known as carcinogens, chlorinated organic substances and free chlorine in the water by the adsorption method. As it is well known, most of the organic compounds are toxic. Organic molecules are completely retained by the activated carbon particles, which have a very large surface area. After a certain operating time of the Activated Carbon system, it is necessary to start the backwashing process. In this case, the system automatically adjusts itself to the backwashing. Backwashing is the process of high flow water flowing in the opposite direction of the water flow in normal operation, washing the filter mineral and increasing the adsorption ability of the minerals by changing the surfaces in contact with the water. The system starts the automatic backwashing process without the need for any human intervention at the previously designated and programmed time. Activated carbon is a coal-like material with a very large surface area (1000-1500 m²/g). The efficiency of the activated carbon filter is determined by the features of the activated carbon used in the filter bed and the correct selection of the filtration rate of the water. In the activated carbon systems, besides the filtration mechanism, the absorption mechanism also takes action during the purification of water. For this reason, Activated Carbon Filters are the systems making physico-chemical treatment. Another point to be considered about the activated carbon is that the mineral bed can create a suitable environment for bacterial growth. Because, activated carbon accumulates the organic matter in its body, and if there are bacteria in the water, the bacteria can reproduce by using this organic matter as nutrient. In such cases, bacterial leakage is possible. For this reason, it is important to disinfect the water before and after the activated carbon.
